Yesterday friday the 20th, we, two friends and I were on our way to a party. The taxi was very late and we still had to pick someone up and we had to be at the club before 22:30 so the brother of one of the friends was so friendly to drive us there.
After picking the other friend up we were off to downtown Kuala Lumpur to the club. While waiting at a traffic light these two scruffy looking motorcycle dudes pull up. Two small Malay men sitting on very big moto cross Kawasaki bikes.
We glance at them and make a joke about the size difference between the men and the bikes and as soon as the light go green they are off. They cut right in front of our car and weave through traffic. In our dismay of their attitude we horn at them for nearly hitting us.
A bit later on the other one weaves right in front of us and showing cocky display, again we horn them.
For a while they seem gone but all of a sudden they are drifting behind the car, one of them is talking on a walkie talkie and for a while they keep drifting behind us.
Only a few minutes later one pulls along side the left of the car and talks to me, I have no clue what he says and find it best to ignore him. He pulls up to the front passenger window and shouts something at my friend. Apparently he is "Polis", police.
As these were men in plain clothes on aggresive looking bikes we didn't really believe them and we first asked for their id. He points to his pants back pocket as if he is telling us that he keeps his ID there and keeps waving at us to pull over.
Finally the other man on the right side flashes something that looks like a card and we pull over.
The two suppose to be police men are telling us to exit the car and turn off the engine, we repeat several times that we first want to have a close look at their identification. After a while, they finally present two id cards.
We decide not to take the risk of pissing them off even more and turn of the engine and exit the car, I stay put. As a white guy you better stay in the back and let the locals handle it. The policeman is asking multiple times where I was from and if the rest are Malaysian citizens. Yes, there is difference between having Chinese heritage or being a "Malay".
The police wants to see ID, they claim it is a random check. Being hesitant in showing our personal information there was some initial debate but afterwards we caved in and handed out our ID cards.
I wasn't carrying my passport at that moment, it is generally better to keep it at home, and the policeman started to make a big fuss about this now. Even after showing my European ID card he still wasn't satisfied.
The men took a sheet of paper out and started writing down our details, something completely unappropriate for just a random checkup. One of my friends already had her father on the phone who is up to speed on regulations and after a quick chat the phone was handed down to the policeman who than got an earfull from the father.
Luckily a police car with cops in uniform drove by and we flagged him to the side of the road.
The police in that car seemed to confirm that the Kawasaki gang were actual cops but they luckily did seem to speed things up and before we knew it the cops in the car had the Kawasaki gang calmed down and we were good to go.
Of course to bully us one more time, they wanted to check the trunk right the second before we were driving away. After they were satisfied with that, we were off again.
Afterwards we had a great time in a club and had a quick and swift taxi drive back home.
